Tauranga is a flea hot-spot, and with the warm, humid conditions of Spring we can see flea infestations quickly become a big problem in our pets – and our homes.
The good news is that with the right prevention strategy in place before spring really hits, you can protect your pet and prevent fleas in your home.
Why Spring marks the start of Flea Season
Fleas love warm humid environments, providing the perfect conditions for them to multiply at an alarming rate. While a single flea might not seem like a major concern, understanding their lifecycle reveals why prevention is so critical.
In the warmer months a flea can complete its entire lifecycle in as little as two to three weeks. One female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, which means that within a month, a small flea problem can explode into thousands of fleas in various life stages throughout your home and garden. These eggs fall off your pet and settle into carpets, bedding, furniture, and outdoor areas where your pet spends time.
This rapid reproduction is why a reactive approach to flea control simply doesn't work. By the time you see fleas on your pet, you're only seeing about 5% of the total flea population. The other 95% are in your environment as eggs, larvae, and pupae, waiting to emerge.
The Unbearable Itch: Flea Allergy Dermatitis
Flea allergy dermatitis, or FAD, is a common skin condition that we treat here at Welcome Bay Vets, particularly during spring and summer.
Flea allergy dermatitis occurs when a pet develops an allergic reaction to proteins in flea saliva. For these sensitive pets, even a single flea bite can trigger intense itching, inflammation, and skin damage. You might notice your pet obsessively grooming, scratching, biting at their skin, or developing red, inflamed patches, particularly around the base of the tail, belly, and inner thighs.
The constant scratching and biting can lead to secondary skin infections, hair loss, and significant discomfort for your pet. The frustrating reality is that for pets with flea allergy dermatitis, flea treatments do not give complete relief, as new fleas jumping onto the pet will bite before the flea treatment does it’s job. For these pets, year-round flea treatment is essential to keep the pet’s environment as flea-free as possible. However, neighbourhood cats and wildlife passing through your back yard can be a source of new flea eggs, so completely avoiding fleas is impossible. Some FAD patients require medication to reduce the itching and keep these pets comfortable.
Why Prevention is Your Best Strategy
When it comes to fleas, prevention is far more effective, less stressful, and more cost-effective than treatment. Once an infestation takes hold, you're facing a much bigger challenge that requires treating not just your pet, but your entire home and outdoor environment.
Modern flea prevention products are highly effective and easy to use. They work by killing adult fleas as they jump onto the pet before they can lay eggs. When used consistently, these products stop a flea population in it’s tracks. Note that it only works if you treat ALL the animals in your household.

You avoid the horror of having an active flea infestation inside your home – fleas aren’t fussy and will bite humans as well as pets! You also avoid the cost and hassle of treating your home. Once fleas establish themselves in your environment, you'll need to treat your carpets, furniture, bedding, and outdoor areas, sometimes repeatedly over several weeks. This is time-consuming, expensive, and often requires professional pest control services.
Choosing the Right Prevention Product

First, treat all pets in your household with an appropriate flea treatment, even if they're not showing signs of fleas.
Second, treat your home environment. Wash all pet bedding on a hot-water cycle, vacuum carpets and furniture where pets like to spend time, and consider using an environmental flea treatment if you are seeing a large number of fleas, or fleas on the human family members. Remember to vacuum regularly for several weeks, as this helps remove eggs and stimulates pupae to emerge so they can be killed by treatments.
